Łukasiewicz – Institute of Aviation was one of the co-organizers of the 10th Droniada – a multidisciplinary drone competition which was accompanied by conferences, workshops and shows. The event was organized on June 1-4, 2023 in Park Śląski and at the Muchowiec Airport.

Droniada has entered a new decade – the competition, popular among fans and experts in the drone industry, celebrates its tenth anniversary in 2023. This year’s edition was divided into three parts: Droniada Challenge by Łukasiewicz – Institute of Aviation, Droniada Tech by Silesian University of Technology and the Droniada Expo & Kids exhibition and shows by Metropolia GZM.

Droniada Challenge: night drone relay

11 academic and open teams participated in the Droniada Challenge. They competed in several competitions checking the qualifications of drone constructors and operators.

A novelty in this year’s edition was the night competition “Sztafeta” (Relay), during which the teams had to determine the evacuation path by dropping light beacons precisely. The competition was conducted over a distance of 16 kilometers at the Muchowiec Airport, and the judges of the “Sztafeta” were experts from the Certification Body from Łukasiewicz – Institute of Aviation.

The competition won Academic Aviation Club of the Wrocław University of Technology. The team received the main prize of PLN 5,000 funded by Łukasiewicz – Institute of Aviation.

Special session: UAV Ecosystem

Droniada is also about debates and discussions among experts. The Institute organized a special session entitled “The UAV Ecosystem: Technology, Law, Future Scenarios” that took place at the Silesian Planetarium in Chorzów on a second day of the event.

Topics covered during the meeting were of the drone industry development strategy and the role of the Institute as an integrator and an institution that builds an ecosystem together with other stakeholders. The Institute presented also its offer for research, technologies and services, and invited companies as technology recipients to cooperate.
