The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) organized the 2024 ICAO Innovation Fair under the slogan “Digital Aviation: the Future is Now” dedicated to the future of aviation in the digital era. The event took place on March 12-14, 2024 in Montreal, Canada.
Director of the Łukasiewicz – Institute of Aviation, Paweł Stężycki, was invited to participate in the discussion panel as vice-chairman of IFAR (International Forum for Aviation Research). During the panel, director Stężycki focused on the necessary need to digitize aviation certification processes. During his presentation, director Stężycki emphasized the versatility of the so-called digital twins throughout the entire life cycle of the aircraft, from design and production to operation and maintenance.
Digital twins offer immersive aviation training experiences by simulating real-world scenarios for pilots, mechanics and air traffic controllers. They play a key role in pilot training, enabling safe practice in a variety of weather conditions without endangering real aircraft. Additionally, they are revolutionizing maintenance training by providing virtual scenarios to diagnose and repair problems, improving efficiency and reducing costs.
Director Stężycki also raised the issue of the need to shorten the product life cycle in aviation due to rapid technological progress and economic and environmental pressure. By integrating digital technologies, we can significantly reduce development time and costs while ensuring aircraft reliability and safety.
During the conference, director Stężycki met with ICAO Secretary General Juan Carlos Salazar to discuss further cooperation between ICAO and IFAR.
“Our partnership, which began in 2022, has already delivered significant results, including the development of a scientific assessment of urban air mobility. This assessment provides a comprehensive analysis of key areas necessary for the development and implementation of UAM systems, covering such aspects as vehicle configurations, safety management systems, environmental impact and many others”, says Paweł Stężycki.
