“Inspire, innovate and discovery for the benefit of mankind” – this was the slogan of the 72nd International Astronautical Congress (IAC) in Dubai on October 25-29, 2021. Each year, this event brings together thousands of engineers and scientists from around the world. It is also a great opportunity to establish contacts with representatives from different countries and cultures working in the space sector.
This year’s edition was attended by representatives of the Space Technologies Department and the Environmental Research Laboratory from Łukasiewicz – Institute of Aviation: Dr. Dominik Kublik, Ewa Majewska, Paweł Nowakowski, Michał Ranachowski and Przemysław Rokosz.
During direct meetings, representatives of the Institute presented the research activities and looked for cooperation opportunities.
As part of the technical session entitled “Post Mission Disposal and Space Debris Removal”, Paweł Nowakowski presented the Institute’s work on the development of a solid propellant engine with a dedicated thrust vectoring system.
Another Institute’s presentation entitled “Propulsion for Direct Deorbitation – Solid Rocket Motor with Thrust Vector Control Development” by Ewa Majewska, Hanna Tuchowska, Michał Ranachowski, Anna Kasztankiewicz, Błażej Marciniak, Damian Kaniewski, Łukasz Radzikowski, Adam Okniński and professor Piotr Wolański was related to the system for deorbiting satellites, developed under several projects for the European Space Agency, which is a response to the growing problem of space debris. This type of propulsion could find an application in future satellites and rocket upper stages, allowing them to be removed from orbit after completing the mission.
EXPO 2020: Polish Space Week
In addition to the presence at the International Astronaut Congress, the Institute’s delegation participated in the Polish-Arab business seminar “Innovations and Trends in the Space Sector” organized by the Polish Investment and Trade Agency together with the Polish Space Agency.
This event took place on October 27 in the Polish pavilion at EXPO 2020, during the Polish Space Week that was ongoing at that time.
In the discussion panel led by the director of the Department of Strategy and International Cooperation of the Polish Space Agency, Dr. Aleksandra Bukała, the representative of the Institute, Dr. Dominik Kublik, together with Hamda Faisal Al Shehhi from the United Arab Emirates Space Agency, Łukasz Wilczyński from the European Space Foundation and Leszek Orzechowski from Space is More, emphasized the importance of international partnership and analyzed the possibilities of Polish-Arab cooperation.
The panel was an introduction to the pitching session during which the activities of the Institute were presented by Ewa Majewska.
Delegates took part also in individual talks with representatives of companies from the space sector, discussing the possibilities of cooperation.
The visit to the Congress of the Institute’s representatives was co-financed by the National Agency for Academic Exchange as part of the Academic International Partnerships Program.

The Łukasiewicz Research Network – Institute of Aviation is one of the most modern research facilities in Europe, with traditions dating back to 1926. The Institute closely cooperates with global tycoons of the aviation industry, such as: GE, Airbus, Pratt & Whitney, and institutions from the space industry, including the European Space Agency. Strategic research areas of the Institute are aviation, space and unmanned technologies. It also provides research and services for domestic and foreign industries in the field of materials, composite, additive, remote sensing, energy and oil&gas technologies.
The Łukasiewicz Research Network provides attractive, complete and competitive technological solutions. It offers a unique system of “challenging” to business, thanks to which a group of 4,500 scientists in no more than 15 working days accepts the business challenge and proposes the entrepreneur to develop an effective implementation solution. At the same time, it involves the highest competences of scientists in Poland and a scientific apparatus unique in Poland. What is most important – the entrepreneur does not bear any costs related to the development of an idea for research work. Łukasiewicz meets the expectations of business in a convenient way. The entrepreneur may decide to contact us not only through the form at https://lukasiewicz.gov.pl/biznes/ but also in more than 50 locations: the Łukasiewicz Institutes and their branches throughout Poland. They will receive the same – high quality – product or service everywhere. The Łukasiewicz potential is focused around such research areas as: health, intelligent mobility, digital transformation and sustainable economy and energy.
