The matchmaking workshop Making of R&D. Financing Smart and Clean Mobility in Space took place on the 24th of October, 2023 as a final event to accompany the opening ceremony of the Rocket and Satellite Propulsion Laboratory Center of Łukasiewicz Research Network – Institute of Aviation. The workshop was organised by the Industry Contact Point “Smart and Clean Mobility” team whose goal is to develop an ecosystem for the Polish companies and scientific institutions to create international consortia and engage in R&D project through the Horizon Europe scheme. This time, the workshop focused on the space sector and with the Łukasiewicz – ILOT industry experts it served to promote the iteration model of project development as an alternative to the classical, linear model.

The event was opened by Beata Lubos, PhD – director of the International Cooperation Department who provided an in-depth explanation behind the idea of the Industry Contact Point “Smart and Clean Mobility” whereas Tobiasz Mayer, the Head of the Space Propulsion Test Section delivered a keynote speech Embracing Iteration: Latest Trends and Potential Directions in Space Sector Development – Why Failing Fast Matters setting the tone for further discussions.

Next, the pitching session took place with three presentations on R&D project ideas from workshop participants:

  • Jakub Strojek, CEO Orbital Matter presenting the pitch Orbital Matter – 3D Printing Construction Company in Space
  • Łukasz Jan Kapusta, PhD, Assistant professor at the Faculty of Power and Aeronautical Engineering for the Institute of Heat Engineering, Warsaw University of Technology with presentation Laser Diagnostics Laboratory of Atomization and Reactive Flows
  • Pushya Subramanyam, Simulation and Analysis Engineer – Propulsion Systems at Polaris Raumflugzeuge GmbH presenting Spaceplane and Aerospike Engine Development at Polaris Raumflugzeuge GmbH

Afterwards, the participants joined to discussion tables where they deliberated on the opportunities and challenges on adopting different approaches to project development:

  1. How to translate ideas and technologies into project phases. Creating Horizon Europa proposals using the TEST – FAIL – REPEAT method led by Tobiasz Mayer and Paweł Surmacz, Head of Satellite Propulsion Section.
  2. Horizon Europa project management and dissemination: publications, commercialization, startups – led by Kamil Sobczak, Head of the Space Propulsion Department and Błażej Marciniak, Head of the Rocket Systems Section.

The entire event was led by Oskar Lubiński, PhD – specialist at the International Cooperation Department.

We are confident that workshop discussions will lead to the development of R&D projects financed by the Horizon Europe scheme. Industry Contact Point “Smart and Clean Mobility” offers support for the companies interested in discussing their projects ideas and seeking help in contacts with other institutions that might be interested in forming consortia for R&D projects.
