The latest publication of the Publishing Houses of the Łukasiewicz Research Network – Institute of Aviation is now on sale. As part of the “Scientific Library” series, a book by Wit Stryczniewicz, PhD titled “Particle Image Velicometry in the practice of aerodynamic research” was published.
Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) is a non-invasive technique for measuring the velocity field of a flowing fluid.
The aim of this monograph is to introduce practical aspects of image anemometry measurements in aerodynamic research, which is its most common application.
The measurement method of image anemometry consists in measuring the displacement of tracer particles moving in a fluid. In spite of the simplicity of the measurement model, obtaining a correct result requires knowledge of a number of issues, including laser technique, particle image registration, image processing and specifics of PIV measurement data processing. The paper presents issues related to measurements using the most popular PIV measurement methodology based on digital processing of a pair of images of particles moving with a fluid in the plane of a light screen.
First, a description of the physical conditions of the research and practical aspects of the measurements with special emphasis on the safety principles of working with the PIV system is focused on. Next, examples of presentation of results and estimation of measurement uncertainty are presented.
The paper is addressed to specialists, researchers and students conducting measurements using the PIV technique, in particular those wishing to apply it to wind tunnel testing.
The book is available in the online bookstore here.
