On 19 March 2013, at the Office of the Marshal of the Mazowieckie Voivodeship, Marshal Adam Struzik, and Director of the Institute of Aviation Witold Antoni Wiśniowski PhD, Eng., signed a preliminary agreement on the co-financing by the European Union of the Centre of Innovative Aeronautical and Space Technologies – a project to be implemented by the Institute of Aviation in Warsaw in the framework of the Regional Operational Programme for Mazowieckie Voivodeship 2007-2013.
The Centre of Innovative Aeronautical and Space Technologies that is currently under construction in Warsaw has the opportunity to become a place where advanced technologies will be developed and young researches will find employment. The Management Board of the Mazowieckie Voivodeship recognised the importance the project and inscribed it on the list of key projects, which is a list of projects of paramount importance for the development of the region or even the whole country.
In the years to come, the new Centre will offer jobs for about 720 researchers including computer scientists, physicists, chemists, etc. It is extremely important in the times when talented young people are often not given the opportunity to reach their potential and struggle in the labour market. It will be also an excellent place to work for students and trainees: last year alone, the Institute of Aviation hosted 200 trainees.
The Centre of Innovative Aeronautical and Space Technologies will be located in a purpose-built facility – a compound of four buildings arranged in the shape of the letter “H”. Three of them will house laboratories. The fourth one, with lecture halls, will be used as a venue for conferences. The total space of the Centre will be almost 11,000 square meters. The new facility will house teams responsible for design and development of, for example, stratospheric aircrafts, intelligent materials or solutions that will enhance the aircraft safety.
It should be also emphasised that the technologies to be developed at the Centre will be innovative and implemented for the first time in Poland (e.g. different types of propulsion for launch vehicles). It will be conductive for the development of niche disciplines such as smart metal and composite materials with applications not limited to the aeronautical and space fields. In the future, such materials could be used not only in the manufacturing industry, surveillance and security systems, construction industry or medical engineering but also in consumer products.
The total value of the project implemented by the Institute of Aviation in Warsaw in the framework of the Regional Operational Programme for Mazowieckie Voivodeship 2007-2013 amounts to over PLN 37.9 million and the Community contribution will amount to over PLN 32.2 million.
