Representatives of the Institute of Aviation participated in the 61st session of the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS) that was held on June 25-26 in Vienna. The delegation was comprised of: professor Piotr Wolański – the chairman of the Committee on Space Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences and the head of national delegation, Leszek Loroch, PhD Eng. – the director of the Center of Space Technologies, Adam Okniński, PhD Eng. – the head of the Space Technologies Department and representatives of Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Polish Space Agency. Professor Piotr Wolański has been chairing the Polish delegation in COPUOS for 16 years and provides the opportunity to join the broad committee and international discussion.
As part of this year’s event, the debate on the sustainable development of the global space sector was conducted. Among twenty-two technical presentations from around the world, the one was of Polish delegates from the Institute of Aviation (“Development of Green Rocket Propulsion in Poland”).
The role of the Institute of Aviation was emphasized as a strong player in the niche of ecological rocket propulsions. Research in this field, as well as the development of engines for deorbiting satellites, coincides with the vision of COPUOS and implementation of the objectives of the committee (SDG, Sustainable Development Goals), as well as market expectations.
