On 9-10 July 2019, the Łukasiewicz Research Network – Institute of Aviation, held the 2nd Composite Safety & Certification Meeting. The event was organized in cooperation with the Federal Aviation Administration, the European Aviation Safety Agency and the National Institute for Aviation Research.
On the first day, Cindy Ashforth, FAA Senior Technical Specialist for Advanced Composite Materials, comprehensively presented the composite structures certification process. At the end of the day, representatives of Spirit Aerosystems shared their experience in composite structures repairs.
On the second day, the presentations were given by representatives of EASA, NIAR, the invited guests from industry (Lockheed Martin, Airbus, GKN Aerospace) and the Center for Composite Technologies (CCT) of the Łukasiewicz Research Network – Institute of Aviation.
ILX-34 Wing Box Demonstrator
The CCT team presented the “ILX-34 Wing Box Demonstrator” project (Konrad Kozaczuk, Małgorzata Zalewska, Marcin Janiszewski, Witold Oleksiak, and Jakub Kaczkowski) which covered all stages of the composite structure development (design, analysis, manufacturing technology development, tests) and caught attention of other participants.
The meeting ended with a discussion panel in which all event leaders participated. The discussion concerned the industry interest for composite structures certification and repairs. From the Łukasiewicz Research Network – Institute of Aviation, the CCT director, Konrad Kozaczuk and Jakub Kaczkowski took part in the debate.
Among the participants of the seminar were representatives of the Civil Aviation Office, Leonardo, PZL Mielec, GE Aviation, ASELSAN, the Air Force Institute of Technology and the Warsaw University of Technology.
The Łukasiewicz Research Network – Institute of Aviation, for several years has been supporting the activities for the safety and composite structures certification through active participation in the FAA-controlled organization, Composite Materials Handbook (CMH-17).
Educational events such as the 2nd Composite Safety & Certification Meeting, joint research projects with NIAR and the development of training programs are the next initiatives of the Composite Technology Center team.
