The Clean Sky Forum took place on 17 March 2015. Bringing all stakeholders in the aeronautics and aviation industries together in one place, the panel discussions explored different partnership opportunities, looked at the aircraft of the future and its journey from the testbench to the market. Furthermore, the opportunities for sustainable aviation and the global challenges were discussed. As part of the Clean Sky Forum, the Award ceremony for the three 2015 Best Clean Sky Projects took place, emphasizing successful examples of Clean Sky Projects. Among the 20 shortlisted candidates from all the different ITDs and TE the first prize went to the STARLET Project – a low TRL project that develops and investigates through CFD Simulations and Wind Tunnel Tests new concepts of fluidic devices dedicated to active control of aerodynamic loads on aircraft wing. The project is realized by a consortium, led by the Institute of Aviation.
The main achievement of the project (based on numerical and experimental studies), was to propose three different fluidic devices used to aircraft wing load control, namely:
1. Fluidic spoiler.
2. Double trailing edge nozzles (DTEN).
3. Leaky Wing.
Expected benefits from use of these fluidic devices:
- Increased safety and comfort of aircraft flights.
- Reduced strains and deformations of wing structure.
- A chance of reducing wing weight and thus reduction of Direct Operating Costs.
- Wing-load alleviation – a much faster than in the case of classic, mechanical devices
