On October 27, 2021, the 12th international conference “Development Trends in Space Propulsion Systems” (Space Trends) was held. The event organized by the Łukasiewicz – Institute of Aviation and the Institute of Thermal Technology of the Warsaw University of Technology gathered 126 experts from research institutions from around the world.
The conference was aimed at scientists and industry representatives dealing with the subject of space propulsion systems, as well as students and young professionals. The meeting was attended by participants from Poland, Germany, Italy, Spain, France, Portugal, Ireland, Sweden, Ukraine, China, Qatar, Great Britain, Australia, the Netherlands and Taiwan. Such a wide participation of foreign speakers from the most renowned research institutions was a great success of the current edition.
– I am deeply convinced that it will bring the expansion of international cooperation, as well as it will help with the dissemination of information in the world of a wide scope and high level of work carried out at our Institute – emphasizes professor Piotr Wolański, chairman of the conference organizing committee.
The conference presented the progress of work on projects and the latest achievements in the international space sector in the field of space propulsion. Particular attention should be paid to the European progress in this field and the current contribution of Poland, which in recent years has become one of the strengths of the European R&D arena in several technological niches in the field of space propulsion.
This topic was discussed, among others, in the welcoming speeches of the deputy director of Łukasiewicz – Institute of Aviation, Sylwester Wyka, PhD Eng. and the vice-president of the Polish Space Agency, professor Marek Moszyński.
In the conference keynote lecture, professor Piotr Wolański presented the activities initiated at the Warsaw University of Technology and later continued at the Institute, which have an impact on the development of the entire domestic rocket propulsion sector. Professor Wolański drew attention to the fact that the Institute carries out projects ranging from low levels of technological readiness (TRL) to technology demonstrators and projects concerning not only components, but entire propulsion systems.
This topic was extended later in the conference by presentations about projects and progress in works and tests carried out at the Institute (ILR-33 AMBER 2K rocket, projects: POLON, ESA SPRODEM, ESA TVC, ESA TLPD, the first RDE rocket in the world, expansion of the current rocket engine test bench).
The patronage over the conference was taken by the Polish Space Agency, the Space and Satellite Research Committee of the Polish Academy of Sciences, the Association of Polish Professionals in the Space Sector and the Association of Space Sector Employers.
The next conference is scheduled for 2023.

The Łukasiewicz Research Network – Institute of Aviation is one of the most modern research facilities in Europe, with traditions dating back to 1926. The Institute closely cooperates with global tycoons of the aviation industry, such as: GE, Airbus, Pratt & Whitney, and institutions from the space industry, including the European Space Agency. Strategic research areas of the Institute are aviation, space and unmanned technologies. It also provides research and services for domestic and foreign industries in the field of materials, composite, additive, remote sensing, energy and oil&gas technologies.
The Łukasiewicz Research Network provides attractive, complete and competitive technological solutions. It offers a unique system of “challenging” to business, thanks to which a group of 4,500 scientists in no more than 15 working days accepts the business challenge and proposes the entrepreneur to develop an effective implementation solution. At the same time, it involves the highest competences of scientists in Poland and a scientific apparatus unique in Poland. What is most important – the entrepreneur does not bear any costs related to the development of an idea for research work. Łukasiewicz meets the expectations of business in a convenient way. The entrepreneur may decide to contact us not only through the form at https://lukasiewicz.gov.pl/biznes/ but also in more than 50 locations: the Łukasiewicz Institutes and their branches throughout Poland. They will receive the same – high quality – product or service everywhere. The Łukasiewicz potential is focused around such research areas as: health, intelligent mobility, digital transformation and sustainable economy and energy.
