A young PhD student of the Institute of Aviation, Borys Łukasik, conducts research that could revolutionize air travel. He told the business magazine My Company Poland about his research work and PhD studies at the Institute of Aviation.
Borys’ scientific stay at a U.S. college made him start research on the analysis of the possibility of using full-electric and turbo-electric technologies for future aircraft. Those calculations of our PhD student even found their way to NASA where they were presented and are already being used.
The idea of turbo-electric propulsion system consists of replacing many turbofan engines with a gas turbine that supplies electric generator, which generates power to drive the plane rotors. One of Borys’ tasks is to examine how to balance some difficulties associated with the use of turbo-electric propulsion system i.e. additional load of generators or electric motors.
