Description: The book contains information which, on the basis of forty years of experience and numerous expertises of aircraft equipment, from minor damage to aircraft disasters, the author considered important for those carrying out fractographic research. Nevertheless, the book should not be treated as a textbook of fractography, because every case of damage or destruction requires an individual approach. The information contained in the book can be very useful at the stage of preparing research programmes and in formulating hypotheses concerning the causes and course of fracture. The book consists of an introduction to the activities preceding the study of appropriate breakthroughs, including the completion of technical and operational documentation, and includes guidelines for the collection, storage and preparation of damaged components for testing. The first part – macrofractographic research – is an essential part of the book, as about 90% of the information necessary to determine the przvczynny and the course of destruction is obtained before the observation of breakthroughs with the naked eye or at the application of small magnifications. The features of breakthroughs, their relation to load types and conditions of work are discussed. An example of quantitative analysis of the destruction process is also given. In the third part, basic information on microscopic characteristics of breakthroughs, revealed by means of electron, scanning or transmission microscopes, is presented.
