The summit is an annual gathering of members of the IFAR organization (International Forum for Aviation Research). The current meeting is being hosted by CIRA (Centro Italiano Ricerche Aerospaziali) in Naples. This year’s conference theme is Advanced Air Mobility.

IFAR is an organization that unites over 26 representatives of aviation institutions from 26 countries worldwide. It serves as a platform for global collaboration with key organizations such as NASA (USA), NRC (Canada), JAXA (Japan), DLR (Germany), VTT (Finland), CAE (China), ONEAR (France), SARC (Sweden), and others.

Collaboration within IFAR is founded on integrating Member Organizations and the aviation industry as a whole. IFAR acts as a platform for sharing knowledge and experience among representatives of various aviation institutions from different countries. This enables gaining new perspectives and approaches to aviation-related issues.

In addition to meetings with experts like Andreas Boschen, the Director of the Sesar Program, and Danilo Cannoletta, the Head of NEMESIS and Digital Transformation at Leonardo, the directors are engaged in discussions concerning the development of IFAR, collaboration with partners, and initiatives undertaken by the Organization.

The Institute presents the outcomes of the working group

During the IFAR summit, Łukasiewicz – Institute of Aviation presented the results of its working group: Electric Hybrid Propulsion. The group presented its activities from the last year, including the results of a series of workshops devoted to analyzing the effectiveness of the use of hydrogen batteries and cells as power sources and the results of workshops on heat management in hydrogen, hybrid and electric systems. The presentation on behalf of the group was given by the group’s leader, Katarzyna Kowalska.

Experts from the Institute are also part of other working groups such as Advanced Air Mobility, Vertical Lift, Composites, and Sustainable Aviation.

The summit is scheduled to last until Friday, October 20, 2023, and the program includes a discussion forum on Advanced Air Mobility in the context of safety, environmental impact, and multimodality, as well as study visits to Leonardo and CIRA laboratories.

The Łukasiewicz – Institute of Aviation is represented by Director, Ph.D. Eng. Paweł Stężycki, Ph.D. Eng. Bartosz Dziugieł, and Katarzyna Kowalska.

IFAR goals

Working together on R&D projects allows aviation institutions to jointly work on research and development projects. This facilitates the efficient use of resources and expertise from various organizations to develop new technologies and innovations.

IFAR also supports the development of young scientists by organizing events dedicated to them, enabling them to establish connections with experienced experts and advance their careers in the aviation field.

Furthermore, through collaboration in IFAR, aviation institutions can influence the shaping of international aviation standards and regulations. This allows for the adaptation of these standards to the industry’s needs, exemplified by cooperation with ICAO.

IFAR also provides better access to resources, information, and experts from other countries, accelerating technology and innovation development.

Finally, it enables aviation institutions to jointly represent themselves on the international stage, increasing the industry’s influence on decisions and development directions at the international level.

_

The Łukasiewicz Research Network – Institute of Aviation is one of the most modern research facilities in Europe, with traditions dating back to 1926. The Institute closely cooperates with global tycoons of the aviation industry, such as: Boeing, GE, Airbus, Pratt & Whitney, and institutions from the space industry, including the European Space Agency. Strategic research areas of the Institute are aviation, space and unmanned technologies. It also provides research and services for domestic and foreign industries in the field of materials, composite, additive, remote sensing, energy and oil&gas technologies.
