{"id":104721,"date":"2023-07-24T09:03:52","date_gmt":"2023-07-24T07:03:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ilot.lukasiewicz.gov.pl\/ekologiczne-paliwo-rakietowe\/"},"modified":"2025-11-27T17:20:04","modified_gmt":"2025-11-27T16:20:04","slug":"ekologiczne-paliwo-rakietowe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ilot.lukasiewicz.gov.pl\/en\/ekologiczne-paliwo-rakietowe\/","title":{"rendered":"New green hypergolic propellant \u2013 potential gamechanger for in-space propulsion"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>While green storable high-performance hypergolic propellants have been the Holy Grail of space propulsion for decades, engineers and scientists from \u0141ukasiewicz \u2013 Institute of Aviation (\u0141ukasiewicz \u2013 ILOT) have successfully completed the key development step required to solve the challenge.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>New propellant for future space missions<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The developed propellant combination uses 98% hydrogen peroxide as oxidizer with a novel fuel. Its hypergolic properties make it perfect for steady-state and impulse operations. Being an alternative to heritage solutions and having a vacuum-specific impulse of 310 seconds, it is gaining wide commercial interest. Its use in bipropellant thrusters proved no issues, unlike in many previous international developments of this kind. The next efforts will be focused on introducing this innovative technology to new systems under development by key space system integrators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The propellant developed at \u0141ukasiewicz&nbsp;<strong>\u2013<\/strong>&nbsp;ILOT is a safer alternative for personnel and the environment to the toxic materials currently in use&nbsp;<strong>\u2013<\/strong>&nbsp;hydrazine derivatives and nitrogen oxides. The developed combination uses hydrogen peroxide (with a concentration of 98%) as oxidizer with a novel fuel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is characterized by high performance&nbsp;<strong>\u2013<\/strong>&nbsp;a specific impulse in a vacuum of 310 seconds, as well as hypergolicity, i.e. the ability to spontaneously ignite when the components get into contact in the combustion chamber.&nbsp; It is an ideal candidate for use in rocket engines for future satellite platforms, landers and upper stages of launch vehicles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The development of a new propellant combination is a long process requiring extensive interdisciplinary testing. Out team achieved this milestone, which may ultimately allow for decreasing costs of new propulsion systems, as well as costs of satellite launch preparations. This takes us one step closer to the goal of Polish fuel becoming a standard for next generation European spacecraft \u2013 says Dr Adam Okninski, director of the Space Technologies Center at \u0141ukasiewicz \u2013 Institute of Aviation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Key features:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022&nbsp;<strong>Specific impulse<\/strong>&nbsp;in vacuum is approximately 310 seconds&nbsp;<strong>\u2013<\/strong>&nbsp;performance is comparable to currently used solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022&nbsp;<strong>High density<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>\u2013<\/strong>&nbsp;requires smaller, lighter tanks and feeding systems in comparison to other propellants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022&nbsp;<strong>Hypergolicity<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>\u2013<\/strong>&nbsp;ignites upon contact with 98% hydrogen peroxide without the need for additional ignition sources, simplifying the engine\u2019s design and allowing for multiple uses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022&nbsp;<strong>Fast and repeatable ignition<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>\u2013<\/strong>&nbsp;allows for use in small thrusters that require short and extremely precise thrust pulses for satellite attitude control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022&nbsp;<strong>Widely available<\/strong>&nbsp;and used in the industry&nbsp;<strong>\u2013<\/strong>&nbsp;no need for rigorous safety procedures compared to other propellants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u2022 Application<\/strong>&nbsp;in satellite propulsion (satellite thrusters) as well as in upper stages of launch vehicles (ease of multiple engine reignitions and shutdowns during maneuvers required to reach the target orbit).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Further research and development<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The team of engineers and scientists at \u0141ukasiewicz \u2013 ILOT has so far conducted over 160 tests of the new propellant using a 20 N thrust engine, designed for satellite propulsion, with a cumulative running time of 2 minutes. The shortest engine firings lasted 10 milliseconds, meeting the requirements of satellites in terms of generating short precise thrust pulses. Some of the engine tests were carried out as a part of &nbsp;\u201c10-20N Green Bipropellant Thruster\u201d project funded by the European Space Agency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Highly repeatable ignition characteristics and stable and reproducible combustion were obtained. The institute closely collaborates with global aviation industry leaders such as Boeing, GE, Airbus, and Pratt &amp; Whitney, as well as institutions in the space industry, including the European Space Agency. The institute\u2019s strategic research areas include aviation, space, and unmanned technologies.
