ERA is an ad-hoc project of the European Defence Agency. It involves 16 partners from five countries: Germany, France, Italy, Poland and Sweden. The leader of the project is the German Airbus Defence and Space, while the leader of the demonstration and verification Work Package is the Rzeszów University of Technology.

The team of Łukasiewicz Research Network – Institute of Aviation in the ERA project was involved in adaptation of the previously chosen Czajka MP-02 experimental plane, belonging to the Institute, to the role of demonstrator platform for the automatic taxiing system.

The works conducted by the Institute included the adaptation of the plane through:

identification of the plane mathematical model to the design of the module of steering the plane during taxiing,

selection and installation of servos controlling the front wheel tilt, brake lever and motor,

design and execution of the computer controlling the executive elements,

design and execution of power supply system for automatic taxiing system devices,

design of external mounting and internal rack for installation of sensors and computers,

organization of assembly of devices developed by partners,

organization of six test campaigns at the airport of the Aviation Training Centre in Jasionka.

– We had the opportunity to learn the organization of work in an international team and look at good practices. We established new contacts and the last test sessions showed that the AutoTaxi team is well connected and can work effectively. Most importantly, we gained knowledge in the field of design. Our technical reports and presentations in the consortium were positively received. The subsystems designed by the Avionics Department , after modifications, worked properly – says Jerzy Graffstein, PhD, ERA project manager on the side of the Łukasiewicz – Institute of Aviation.

Finally, the demonstrations took place in virtual form and included a screening of films and simulations, and the level of technological readiness (TRL) of the AutoTaxi system was rated at 4-5.

Photo: Katarzyna Nowosielska-Augustyniak

More information:
https://www.eda.europa.eu/info-hub/press-centre/latest-news/2020/09/09/rpas-automation-project-helps-set-european-standards

—

Łukasiewicz Research Network – Institute of Aviation is one of the most modern research facilities in Europe, with traditions dating back to 1926.
